This essay would then be peer reviewed by other students and then graded.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1187\" data-end=\"1317\">What I was trying to describe, very clumsily, was the tension between discrimination and the fear of being seen as discriminatory.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"228\" data-end=\"271\">My teenage brain turned that into an essay.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"228\" data-end=\"271\">Poorly.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"228\" data-end=\"271\">Very poorly, even.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"228\" data-end=\"271\">Even though my own brain thought:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"228\" data-end=\"271\">\u201cYeah\u2026 this is nuanced. This is a good one.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"228\" data-end=\"271\">Looking back, I also realize my essay did not appear in a vacuum.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1187\" data-end=\"1317\">This was the early 1990s, when discrimination, multiculturalism and integration were heavily debated throughout Dutch society.<\/p>\n<p>Hell, the entire reason I picked that topic was because those discussions were everywhere in the early 1990s.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"295\" data-end=\"415\">I did not save the essay, nor do I have a backup of it.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"295\" data-end=\"415\">But I still remember my honest intentions behind writing it.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"295\" data-end=\"415\">I was trying to explore a nuanced question: whether authorities and society might respond differently depending on which group was involved in causing trouble.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"295\" data-end=\"415\">Nothing more, nothing less.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"295\" data-end=\"415\">At least in my own mind, I genuinely tried to keep the focus on that question rather than on the groups themselves, because that was never the actual point of the essay.<\/p>\n<p>Looking back, I underestimated how much simply naming a group would dominate how people interpreted everything else I was trying to say.<\/p>\n<h2>Peer reviews<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"206\" data-end=\"268\">Then the peer reviews came in, and they absolutely crushed me.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"206\" data-end=\"268\">I particularly remember one remark:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"206\" data-end=\"268\">\u201cThis essay can be seen as racist, and you might be one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"206\" data-end=\"268\">Yeah. That blunt.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"206\" data-end=\"268\">Oh boy.<\/p>\n<p>Trust me, to say that stung would be a massive understatement.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"450\" data-end=\"566\">That was never the intention of the essay, and being racist is not part of my programming. Never was, never will be.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"450\" data-end=\"566\">But I have to be very honest:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"450\" data-end=\"566\">That essay, and the hurricane that followed afterwards, changed me.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"450\" data-end=\"566\">I can still remember the lesson where I received those peer reviews.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"450\" data-end=\"566\">The day.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"450\" data-end=\"566\">The weather.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"450\" data-end=\"566\">The looks on their faces.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"450\" data-end=\"566\">And the instant gut punch I felt in my stomach.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"450\" data-end=\"566\">I no longer remember what I wrote exactly. But the aftermath is here to stay forever.<\/p>\n<p>That is probably also why this memory is stored on level -2 inside my WORM archives, in the very painful section.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"182\" data-end=\"281\">My WORM archives are not fully described on this blog yet, but you can find a short reference <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familie-kleinman.nl\/brain\/index.php\/2025\/04\/17\/kernel-panic-2-a-deals-a-deal-until-it-isnt\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"182\" data-end=\"281\">Basically, level -2 is deep in my basement, where very painful memories are stored in Write Once Read Many storage.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"182\" data-end=\"281\">These memories are almost impossible to forget and are relived on a fairly regular basis.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"535\" data-end=\"570\">This was not a single <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familie-kleinman.nl\/brain\/index.php\/2025\/04\/06\/kernel-panic-1-the-first-i-know-of\/\">kernel panic.<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"535\" data-end=\"570\">It was a slow-motion kernel panic that unfolded over the course of several weeks.<\/p>\n<h2>Guilt<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"168\" data-end=\"196\">The guilt nearly crushed me.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"168\" data-end=\"196\">For weeks, I went to school with what felt like a block of concrete in my stomach.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"168\" data-end=\"196\">I feared Dutch language classes the most, especially the Thursday sessions where the essays were discussed.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"168\" data-end=\"196\">I can still remember toying with the idea of correcting my essay, explaining my actual intentions behind it, or even rewriting the entire thing from scratch.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"168\" data-end=\"196\">I also seriously considered giving a public apology in front of the class.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"168\" data-end=\"196\">Yes.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"168\" data-end=\"196\">A public apology.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"168\" data-end=\"196\">I did not know I had autism back then, but the mere thought of doing that nearly paralyzed me.<\/p>\n<h2>Grade<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"267\" data-end=\"298\">I know I passed the assignment.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"267\" data-end=\"298\">But by then, the damage had already been done.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"189\" data-end=\"201\">The fallout?<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"189\" data-end=\"201\">More isolation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"189\" data-end=\"201\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.familie-kleinman.nl\/brain\/index.php\/2025\/05\/04\/school-autistic-edition-the-user-manual-i-never-got\/\">Obviously<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"189\" data-end=\"201\">Words do matter<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"757\" data-end=\"839\">Words do matter. Especially when the subject itself is already emotionally loaded.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"757\" data-end=\"839\">That is something I learned the hard way over the years, and one of the main reasons why I tend to avoid certain topics altogether.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"757\" data-end=\"839\">Because there is often a gap between what exists in your head and what eventually ends up on paper.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"757\" data-end=\"839\">Sometimes the message lands exactly as intended.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"757\" data-end=\"839\">Sometimes the exact opposite lands.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"757\" data-end=\"839\">That is what happened to me while writing this essay.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"757\" data-end=\"839\">Looking back, I probably should have picked a different topic.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"757\" data-end=\"839\">Preferably one that was a little less loaded.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"757\" data-end=\"839\">Great to know that in hindsight.<\/p>\n<h2>Only me?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">And then there is another painful observation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">I remember this incident as if it happened yesterday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The classroom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The discussions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The knot in my stomach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Would my classmates still remember this incident after more than thirty years?<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Probably not.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Would my Dutch teacher remember it?<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Probably not either.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">For them, it was likely just another essay. Another discussion. Another school day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">For me, it became something else entirely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">I am probably the only person who still remembers this incident in any meaningful detail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">And in a certain way, that is sad.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">There is no one left that I can have an honest conversation with about it. No one with the same memories. No one with the same context. No one who was inside my head at that moment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The people involved have moved on with their lives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Meanwhile, a copy of that day is still sitting somewhere in my WORM archives on level -2.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Untouched.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Unchanged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Waiting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">And sometimes I genuinely wonder why.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Why did my brain decide that this particular event deserved permanent storage?<\/p>\n<p>Maybe my brain was never storing the essay.
