Marketing agencies offering to increase conversions for businesses that have no customers, scammers, phishing emails&#8230; and more.<\/p>\n<p>And, occasionally, electronic component distributors asking whether I have any purchasing requirements.<\/p>\n<p>Usually, these messages go straight into the spam folder.<\/p>\n<p>One particular email caught my attention.<\/p>\n<p>It came from someone called Amy. Or possibly Teresa. Wait.. Whaat?!<\/p>\n<p>Okay, then an interesting question popped up. LMNOP-1234-LOL<\/p>\n<p>Yeah. That one is obvious.<\/p>\n<p>Both some components actually exist. The requested specifications, however, are rather&#8230; specific.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An LM2940 in LaserQuest LQX proportions, preferably 1998 specification?<\/li>\n<li>An NE555 that was manufactured on a Tuesday?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Good luck with that!<\/p>\n<p>And then there is the perfect one!:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>3 metres of wireless cable.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>See the problem with that one?<\/p>\n<p>Take your time!<\/p>\n<p>Any apprentice engineer has probably been sent out at least once to find something equally useful: a square drill bit, a bucket of compressed air, a left-handed screwdriver, a long weight, striped paint, a glass hammer, a metric adjustable wrench, replacement bubbles for a spirit level, or a box of wireless IP packets.<\/p>\n<p>It is basically an engineering rite of passage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cGo to stores and ask them for three metres of wireless cable.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And somewhere, an apprentice is going to spend twenty minutes looking for it before the person behind the counter starts laughing.<\/p>\n<p>Insert evil laugh here.<\/p>\n<p>And the rest of the specifications are IMHO even funnier:<\/p>\n<p>All components had to be RoHS compliant, REACH compliant, gluten-free, compatible with Windows 3.11 for Workgroups and free from previous exposure to country music.<\/p>\n<p>It is partially real and partially bait!<\/p>\n<p>And I sent the mail thinking Amy will never respond ever again.<\/p>\n<p>I was wrong!<\/p>\n<p>Two days later I received two emails, yes two!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>amy@oneriverelec.com, RE: Fw:Re: rfq<\/li>\n<li>amy@onerivertech.com, Re:Re: rfq<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-748\" src=\"https:\/\/www.familie-kleinman.nl\/brain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1115\" height=\"1117\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.familie-kleinman.nl\/brain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/4.png 1115w, https:\/\/www.familie-kleinman.nl\/brain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/4-300x301.png 300w, https:\/\/www.familie-kleinman.nl\/brain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/4-1022x1024.png 1022w, https:\/\/www.familie-kleinman.nl\/brain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/4-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.familie-kleinman.nl\/brain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/4-768x769.png 768w, https:\/\/www.familie-kleinman.nl\/brain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/4-850x852.png 850w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1115px) 100vw, 1115px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ehhh two mails? ( D0h! )<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Three metres of wireless cable? <strong>Unavailable.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Of all the disappointing news in the quotation, this one hurt the most. The entire project had been designed around exactly three metres of wireless cable.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had apparently taken my list seriously enough to check which components could actually be sourced.<\/p>\n<p>This was the exact moment I realised:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Oh no. Time for tumbleweed<\/p>\n<p>Amy has not responded&#8230; Yet!<\/p>\n<h2>Use of AI<\/h2>\n<p>Could AI actually make cold-email spam economically useless?<\/p>\n<p>Think about the economics of unsolicited sales email for a moment.<\/p>\n<p>Sending email is cheap.<\/p>\n<p>Really cheap.<\/p>\n<p>A company can send thousands of messages such as the one that started this story. Most recipients will delete them. Some will be filtered automatically. A tiny percentage may respond.<\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s enough.<\/p>\n<p>The sender spends almost no additional effort on the thousands of people who aren&#8217;t interested.<\/p>\n<p>The cost is asymmetric.<\/p>\n<p>They automate sending.<\/p>\n<p>We manually delete.<\/p>\n<p>But generative AI introduces an interesting possibility.<\/p>\n<p>What if we reverse that asymmetry?<\/p>\n<p>In this case, writing a response asking about three metres of wireless cable cost me almost nothing. ChatGPT generated most of it and I had a good laugh reading the responses.<\/p>\n<p>Amy, however, apparently did real work.<\/p>\n<p>Someone searched for: LMNOP-1234-LOL<br \/>\nSomeone searched for: SN74WTF420N<br \/>\nSomeone apparently searched for: NE15555<\/p>\n<p>But what if enough people did this?<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly, the asymmetry might start to flip.<\/p>\n<p>Basically:<\/p>\n<pre>Spam arrives\r\n\u2193\r\nAI classifies it\r\n\u2193\r\nIs it phishing\/malware?\r\n\u251c\u2500\u2500 YES \u2192 Do not engage\r\n\u2502\r\n\u2514\u2500\u2500 NO\r\n\u2193\r\nIs it unsolicited human-operated sales?\r\n\u251c\u2500\u2500 NO \u2192 Ignore\r\n\u2502\r\n\u2514\u2500\u2500 YES\r\n\u2193\r\nGenerate plausible but ridiculous RFQ\r\n\u2193\r\nHuman salesperson responds\r\n\u2193\r\nAdd another procurement requirement\r\n\u2193\r\nHuman salesperson responds\r\n\u2193\r\nCreate another department\r\n\u2193\r\nRepeat<\/pre>\n<p>Obviously, this should never blindly reply to everything. Phishing, malware and fully automated junk should be ignored.
